Arik Air overbooks flight; 16 people standing onboard

This happened earlier on at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos. This information came from passengers on the plane. Apparently Arik Air overbooked their Lagos-Benin flight by 16 people, and all sixteen passenger refused to get off the plane. Passengers had been at the airport since 6:30. The flight was initially supposed to take off at 7:30, then delayed till 11am. It was eventually boarded at almost 12 with 16 people more than available seats. The Arik Air involved is the one you see in this photo - the John Paul 2. Passengers refused to leave and the plane refused to fly as well.

Lol. Naija oo! So Arik doesn't know when to stop selling tickets? Or they were hoping some passengers wouldn't show?

Qatar airline makes an emergency landing in Lagos

Qatar Airline flight 592 from Doha to Lagos made an emergency landing yesterday at the Murtala Muhammed International airport, Lagos. The pilots discovered midair that one tyre had low pressure, making landing difficult. They radioed our airport for emergency precaution and a vehicle to tow the plane from the runway to the gate.

The best part was, more than 95% of the passengers didn't even know anything was wrong until the plane landed and they saw fire service and National  Emergency Management Agency all around. One of the passengers tweeted that it was a smooth landing so was surprised that they even had issues.

The plane has been slowly towed to it's landing spot at the airport.

EFCC arrests 24yr old currency courier trying to export N1b cash out of Nigeria

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) two days ago arrested one Abubakar Tijani Sheriff, whom it described as a bulk currency smuggler, as he attempted to smuggle $7million out of the country. The EFCC said in a statement yesterday that Sheriff, 24, was arrested at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Lagos en route Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as he boarded his flight.

Following his arrest, he declared that he had a total sum of $4.5million on him but thorough screening and search showed that he was actually carrying $7,049,444, the commission said.  Sheriff then confessed that he was a courier for 20 individuals who hired him to courier the money for them to Dubai.

"Investigations by the EFCC showed that Sheriff is a regular traveller and one of several couriers of illegal cash suspected to be proceeds of crime,” the commission adding that his claims concerning his accomplices are being investigated.

Travellers leaving the country are statutorily required to declare cash in excess of $10,000. However, under the provisions of the Money Laundering Act, it is not sufficient to declare excess cash; the onus is on the person making the declaration to explain the source of the excess cash and the reason for the export.

Patience Jonathan battling Parkinson's disease? - Sahara Reporters

Found this report on Saharareporters.com
Nigeria’s First Lady, Patience Jonathan, is battling an onset of Parkinson’s disease that has complicated her recovery from a surgical procedure in Germany, several reliable sources have disclosed to SaharaReporters.
SaharaReporters broke the news that Mrs. Jonathan was flown to a hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany close to a month ago to undergo emergency treatment after a botched procedure in Dubai.
In interviews with three sources familiar with Mrs. Jonathan’s health status, SaharaReporters learnt that the Nigerian president’s wife is beset by Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative syndrome. The disease is a progressive disorder of the nervous system. A medical source described it as “a fairly common disorder that occasions degeneration of the nervous system.” The source added that the disease leads to “progressive impairment and disorder of movement.” An online medical site notes that Parkinson’s “is characterized by progressive loss of muscle control, which leads to trembling of the limbs and head while at rest, stiffness, slowness, and impaired balance. As symptoms worsen, it may become difficult to walk, talk, and complete simple tasks.”

The bombshell revelation about the First Lady’s medical woes was first made by a source familiar with Mrs. Jonathan’s previous secret treatments in Spain and Italy. The source disclosed that Mrs. Jonathan had battled Parkinson’s for some years now. In addition, doctors had advised her to “do something urgent about her morbid body mass index (BMI),” said the source. She added that Mrs. Jonathan had indeed considered undergoing the kind of tummy tuck procedure that former Governor Diepreye Alamieyeseigha once had.
Two other sources close to the Jonathans confirmed that the First Lady has been dogged by Parkinson’s. One said the disease was largely responsible for her clumsiness, drawling speech and slow movement at public events. He added that Mrs. Jonathan has been suffering serious trembling in the left hand. “That’s why she always uses her right to hold the microphone when speaking at public events,” the source revealed. Mrs. Jonathan also reportedly is affected by stiffness of the limbs and trunk which affects her movement.
A news staffer at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) told SaharaReporters that Mrs. Jonathan’s aides warned reporters covering her never to film her beyond her waist. “Her senior personal assistant told the crew covering her long ago: ‘Don’t ever film Madam’s waist. Show her face only.’ That’s been the code at NTA.”

Two of our sources stated that Mrs. Jonathan had made efforts to slow the disease that had started to ravage her. “She has been visiting a health farm in Italy on a regular basis since 2010,” one source revealed. “To alleviate her pain, she has been taking her medication religiously.”

A friend of Mrs. Jonathan’s said that the First Lady’s health maladies include anxiety, occasional memory loss and disorientation. In addition, her blood pressure often rises to dangerous levels, forcing her to take a cocktail of anti-hypertensive drugs.

Also, our sources said that some officials attached to the First Lady’s office described her as constantly depressed, prone to snapping at people at the slightest provocation. “The First Lady can just get angry at the slightest provocation and rain abuses at anybody in sight,” he said.

As happened during the health crisis of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, the Nigerian Presidency’s reaction to Mrs. Jonathan’s health condition is to be mum. When SaharaReporters contacted a senior aide of President Jonathan on the matter of the First Lady’s illness, he sharply said, “I’m not saying anything. And please don’t mention that you spoke to me.” SaharaReporters learnt that officials of the Presidency are under a virtual oath of secrecy on the issue of Mrs. Jonathan’s health crisis.

Saudi Arabia deports 683 female pilgrims

The government of Saudi Arabia yesterday Thursday September 27th deported another batch of 512 pilgrims to Nigeria, a day after deporting 171 women.

Over one thousand Nigerian female pilgrims were detained at the Abdul-Aziz International Airport and King Fahd Airport in Jeddah and Medina before they started gradually deporting them into Nigeria via Kano and Sokoto airports

Corruption Perception Index

Corruption is a global phenomenon that has hindered global development. Though it is not peculiar to a region or continent, there are areas that the effect of corruption are felt more than others; Africa is one of such places. According to an article by Nick Dearden, African leaders have impoverished the continent through corruption that many countries rely on foreign aid which is even redirected by these same leaders into to their personal gains rather than people oriented projects. Nigeria is one country known worldwide for the issue of corruption most especially bureaucratic corruption. This is a corruption that occurs in public administration where public office holders embezzle the funds meant for the citizenry.

A nongovernmental group known as the Transparency International has designed a means of measuring the rate of corruption in about 178 countries. The model is known as Transparency Perceptions Index (TPI) where countries are rated 10 to 1 with the highest number being the most transparent country and the lowest number indicates the most corrupt. From its 2010 rating, Denmark, New Zealand and Singapore are tied at the top of the list with a score of 9.3, followed closely by Finland and Sweden at 9.2. At the bottom is Somalia with a score of 1.1, slightly trailing Myanmar and Afghanistan at 1.4 and Iraq at 1.5. Nigeria is rated number 134 most transparent country in the world with 2.2 (see: http://www.transparency.org/ cpi2010/results).

A nation with over 250 ethnic groups and finely divided into two religions (Christianity and Islam) has had a series of division using those classifications. Could these reasons be the root of Nigeria corruption or it goes beyond that?

Shot dead by policemen 5days after his wedding

Ugo Ozuah was allegedly shot by men of the "Nigerian police force" in front of the UPS office on the Gbagada Express way on Thursday September 20th. He died early yesterday morning at a hospital in Lagos. Ugo just got married last Saturday September 15th, 2012.

Details as to what really happened that Thursday night are sketchy but according to friends of the late businessman, he was at the expressway with another friend trying to flag down a taxi around 9 at night, when policemen pulled up and shot him twice in the chest at close range. They said he was not resisting arrest, he wasn't arguing with the police, he was not asked to identify himself, he was just standing there with a friend and got killed for no reason.

Sounds crazy to me, though the IG of police has said the men that killed the newly married man were not policemen...but they were wearing police uniform, so who were they please?

This is truly sad, touching and unfortunate! I can't even imagine what his wife would be going through at this moment. Hopefully, Ugo's family will get justice.

Nigerian artist M.I writes on the "Hold Me back" video by Rick Ross shot in Nigeria

See what the rapper wrote on his website below and tell us what you think...
Does it make you angry? Does it rile you to see your country portrayed as poor and suffering and full of struggle? It burns you, does it not? To have some foreigner- who knows nothing of your history and pain, of the stories that flow within your blood- to have this foreigner come in and tell your story? Is it not the height of disrespect and insensitivity? Does it not chafe against the thick skin you have grown to cover your other wounds?
Does it not make you angry? We should wax sanctimonious about national pride being slighted. We should vent our displeasure online. We should occupy something. Because God forbid the truth ever be told about what things really are. God forbid a stranger reminds us about those things we choose to ignore every day.
God forbid we ever face the truth about ourselves. God forbid we do not go on the internet and rail about how our country is being cast in bad light. God forbid we do not talk about how there is a small minority which lives better than portrayed. God forbid we do not ignore truth one more time. God forbid we don’t.

Apparently there's a Kanye West sex tape

According to Radaronline.com, there's a Kanye West sex tape - with a married 18 year old lady. Below is how the news site is reporting it...
Kanye West has a sex tape - with a Kim look-a-like! The tape is nearly 20 minutes long and appears to have been shot in a hotel room with an unidentified female who clearly states at the beginning of the video that she's 18 years old. The woman also confesses to Kanye that she is married and claims, "My husband and I don't have sex anymore… that's why I'm here!"
With her bodacious curves, dusky skin and long black hair the woman is a definite dead ringer for Kim Kardashian. RadarOnline.com has seen the tape in full and can verify without a doubt that it is Kanye in the footage and we have published a screen grab.

During the couple's steamy sex romp, they never kiss and don't interact any further than simply doing the deed, in various positions throughout and with Kanye wearing a condom.

Kanye is clearly aware the romp is being filmed because you can see that he's the one who set up the camera in the beginning and at the end he looks directly into it before switching it off.

According to a San Fernando sex industry insider, the video was shot sometime shortly before Kanye started dating Kim and he is terrified of the tape getting out.

"The sex tape is being shopped right now and there's a lot of interest, but Kanye is freaking out!" the insider revealed. "He doesn't want this tape out and will do anything to make sure it stays private.
"If this were to hit the market it would be worth a fortune… there would definitely be a lot of people wanting to see this! "In my expert opinion Kanye's performance far outweighs Kim's!"

The insider concludes by telling RadarOnline.com: "Kanye was practically in tears when he heard the tape was being shopped."

Orji Uzor Kalu states "Igbo will vote Igbo, Yoruba will vote Yoruba"

"In 2015, what will happen is that the Igbo will vote for the Igbo, Yoruba for Yoruba and Hausa vote for Hausa. Then, we will all come to Abuja to discuss and determine who should be Nigerian President… Anybody who thinks that there is going to be a straight ballot thing to produce the President in 2015 is only fooling himself." - Former Abia State Governor, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu said this at the Professor David Ijalaiye annual lecture series which took place yesterday at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.

What do you guys think of this statement? Nigerians are not that shallow and tribalistic, are we? We will vote because someone is from our tribe and not because we believe in that person? C'mon! Please share your thoughts...

Fuel scarcity return to Lagos: "scarcity to persist" says NNPC

Long queues have returned to filling stations in Lagos and the National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) hinted on sunday that it may take some time to disappear.

NNPC spokesman, Mr Fidel Pepple, said the scarcity is 'artificial', and was triggered by the destruction of the NNPC's pipeline at Arepo, Ogun State. He said bunkerers attacked the pipeline in Ibafo, Ogun State, to scoop fuel and also shot and killed three PPMC engineers and technicians deployed to repair the vandalized pipeline.

According to Pepple, the development has forced NNPC to bridge products by truck as against the pipeline and said the repairs of the vandalized pipeline may take a while as the corporation is not ready to risk the lives of more officials.

Davido issues official statement about alleged arrest warrant

As you all know by now there have been rumors about an arrest warrant for Davido. These are all false, according to the singer's management. Below is an official statement from Davido & HKN Music.
I want to assure all my beloved fans and friends that, I am not wanted by the police and no officer in the Nigerian police gave an order for my arrest. I went to the police some weeks ago to give a statement and cleared my name. I did not beat up any taxi driver and the lady that hired the taxi driver and all those that are involved in this matter have made statements to the police and none of them mentioned my name except the taxi driver who claims that a large sum of money was missing in his taxi, in fact the lady in question stated that she was not beaten by anyone and that nobody assaulted the taxi driver.  This is a case of blackmail, and I have resolved not to succumb to any blackmail for money. And to all those that are involved in this conspiracy to bring me down, I want to remind you that God Almighty himself got me to where I am today in my music career and you will not succeed in your devilish efforts to bring me down.

Ex- Interior Minister arrested over alleged oil theft

Former Minister of Interior, Captain Emmanuel Iheanacho was on Friday arrested over his alleged involvement in the hijack of a vessel said to be carrying suspected stolen petroleum products.

The Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) Mr. Patrick Akpobolokemi who disclosed the arrest said that the search for the sponsors of these pirates has led to the tracing of the stolen products to Integrated oil and Gas Limited tank farm owned by the Captain Iheanacho.

Akpobolokemi who represented by NIMASA’s Executive Director in charge of maritime labour services and Cabotage Barr. Obi Nwabueze said that the premise of the company has been sealed off pending investigation.

According to him NIMASA has realised that there are the kingpins and the big men who facilitate piracy adding the agency in collaboration with other security operatives will unravel the people behind the sale, purchase and storage of the stolen products.

“You recalled we had cause to parade some pirates here and we did say that we were going to continue to look for those who were behind these pirates because we came to the realisation that behind the facade there are the kingpins and the big men who facilitate piracy.

“So in line with our promise to the Nigerian public, we intensified our search for the big men behind the scene and we are happy to tell you today that we have been able to trace them to a company, a major company integrated oil and gas.

“The products that were stolen from the activities of piracy were conveyed and stored at integrated oil and gas. As we speak we have sealed off the company and we have arrested the top management of the company” Akpobolokemi stated.

Court refuses to stop impeachment move against Jonathan

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Friday, refused to stop the House of Representatives from beginning impeachment moves against President Goodluck Jonathan over poor budget implementation.

Justice Gabriel Kolawole declined the exparte application by the National Chairman of African Liberation Party (ALP), Dr. Emmanuel Osita Okere, who asked the court to stop the House.

Emphasizing the need for caution, the court said it must have been established that the impeachment proceedings had begun before it could hear the suit in order not to interfere with the functions of the House.

By the provision of Section 143 (1) of the 1999 Constitution, the court held that no single arm of the national assembly can unilaterally impeach the president, adding that it requires a joint resolution of the House and the Senate before the president could be removed.

By not joining the Senate as a party to the suit, the court said, the motion ex-parte cannot succeed.

"This may not be the proper occasion for this court to grant ex parte order against the 2nd and 3rd defendants, as the reliefs sought by the plaintiff largely benefits the president", the court said.

Justice Kolawole accordingly refused the ex parte order and adjourned the matter indefinitely, for the Chief Judge to re-assign the case.

Moving the exparte application, the Applicant's counsel, Alex Williams had prayed the court to grant an interim order restraining the House, saying, it was capable of distracting the president from discharging his duties.

The defendants are the Speaker Aminu Tambuwal; the House of Representatives, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice and President Jonathan.

In his affidavit in support of the originating summons, the plaintiff stated that the move to impeach the president is heating up the polity, describing it as a disguise to cause political turmoil.

French magazine publishes topless photos of Kate Middleton

French magazine, "Closer", this morning published topless photos of the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, with the headline - 'Oh My God - the photos that will go around the world.". Underneath, it says: "See incredible pictures of the future queen of England like you have never seen her....and as you will never see her again'.

The topless photos, taken while Kate and William were on private holiday last week, were splashed on the front cover of the magazine and inside on five pages. The photos were taken on the terrace of a guest house in Provence, France, where the couple vacationed last week

In one photo, William is seen rubbing sunscreen on the lower end of Kate's backside, in another the couple laugh as they lounge in chairs near a folded red parasol, in a third Kate holds the top of her bikini across her chest, either taking it off or putting it back on. The couple were beside a swimming pool.

The royal family have condemned the publication and are planning to send their lawyers to France.

They say victory loves careful preparation, ay? Well, I guess Emeka John got lucky in one of oddest places….. A beer parlour. Emeka is a trailer driver who was spotted drinking bottles of Star lager beer just in the right place and at the right time. Unknown to him, Star was giving away instant gift prizes for Star drinkers through a raffle draw. Emeka was given some prizes including a raffle ticket to participate in Star TV Game Show in Lagos.

He was later flown to Lagos, all expenses paid for, from his base in Benin, just to participate in the Game Show. Since Star Game Show is team-based, he was by sheer luck grouped alongside David Smith and Ugwu Chukwuemeka. At the end of the games, the trio emerged the winning team. Each team member pocketed N1 million for their victory.

Emeka John, first from the left

When he was asked the feeling he had about winning N1 million, he did not waste time to make the announcement of his resignation from  his work place. He declared: “My days of working for other people are over. I will use this N1 million to buy my own truck.”

If indeed he truly plans to buy his own truck, we wish him well in his future endeavours as an entrepreneur. But if he just uttered those words on the spur of the moment or out of sheer excitement, we can only hope that his boss neither gets to watch that particular episode of Star Game Show on TV stations; nor hear about this particular post!

There are some statements bosses do not usually find funny when they are spoken by their employees. One of them is: “My days of working for other people are over!”

Lagos State Government says "beautify your house or go to Jail"

These people will not kill somebody with all their funny laws. The most recent law is; beautify your house or go to jail!

The Lagos state Commissioner for Environment Tunji Bello said yesterday..
"It is now mandatory for tenement/owners and occupiers to landscape and beautify the perimeter areas of their properties. A violation of this would attract N250, 000 or the amount the state would incur if it decides to carry out the beautification, or six months imprisonment or other non-custodian sentences…also anyone caught felling trees in the state or trimming them without permission would be fined a minimum of N50,000 or sent to one year imprisonment.
It is also an offence to walk on lawns and gardens. Urinating, defecating in any of the parks, gardens and open spaces; loitering or soliciting for illegal purposes, smoking and dumping refuse among others in the parks are also offences.”
 The commissioner then added that.....
.... the Lagos State government wants Lagos to be as beautiful as Singapore. LoL! There's even an agency that will implement the law; it's called the Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency, LASPARK, which was inaugurated yesterday. So people please start beautifying your houses oo! plant flowers... :D

Assassins threaten Treasure Daniels. "Leave Lagos now!!"

                                                              Tracy and Treasure Daniels

This story is on the cover of Encomium magazine - written by Stella Dimoko Korkus. See below....
According to sources close  to the Identical twins; 'Treasure has been hiding. She started receiving threatening calls last year and this time handwritten death threats started arriving her door post asking her to leave town and not contact her twin sister anymore. Treasure didn't take it serious until she was called and told that one more visit would result in bloodshed, that she should leave town and not return. Treasure has left Lagos and is in hiding. Nobody knows who's behind the death threats but the people calling her knew of her day-to-day movement; what she eats and when she moved house. They even gave her her new house address before she moved.
The Nigerian police have stepped into the case but have not been able to solve or catch the culprit(s). But friends of the actresses believe that the threats are coming from insiders because they are able to tell the identical twins apart.

Presidency replaces Aides around First Lady

Culled from TheWill

The Presidency has replaced security aides around first lady Patience Jonathan in order to keep her affairs private at the Wiesbaden, Germany hospital, Horst Schmidt Kliniken, following speculations about her health, TheWill can report.
A security source with knowledge of the development told TheWill that the Presidency’s action followed reports of her medical sojourn to the hospital, believed to have been leaked by someone amongst the team of six aides dispatched to Germany ahead of her arrival.
The aides were withdrawn and replaced with a new team of six security aides from the SSS, our source said, adding that when the replacement team, made up of more experienced and trusted aides arrived Germany, they were stripped of other phones and directed to stay off the social media and the internet.

The Presidency has kept mum since reports of the first lady’s treatment in the German hospital hit the media. There have been speculations surrounding her ailment and what exactly she is being treated for.

President Goodluck Jonathan has not visited his wife since her hospitalization about three weeks ago. A top level official in the Botswana government, one of the two countries the President had visited on a 3-day working tour told THEWILL source that the President abruptly cancelled a scheduled engagement this evening and made straight for the airport heightening fears that the first lady’s condition may have deteriorated.

THEWILL has not been able to independently confirm where the President is headed.

President Jonathan was scheduled to leave Gaborone, the Botswana capital on Wednesday.

Several calls to the President’s spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati with a 3-hour period to get a reaction were unsuccessful as his phones were switched off.

2012 MDG report

The 2012 MDGs Report has provided some insight to the global progress in achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).

It was captured well by the UN Secretary General about the 2012 MDGs’ Report released not too long ago  “this year’s report on progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) highlights several milestones. The target of reducing extreme poverty by half has been reached five years ahead of the 2015 deadline, with the target of halving the proportion of people who lack dependable access to improved sources of drinking water. Conditions for more than 200 million people living in slums have been ameliorated—double the 2020 target. Primary school enrolment of girls equalled that of boys, and we have seen accelerating progress in reducing child and maternal mortality.”

Last week Nicki Minaj endorsed the Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney, in a rap on Lil Wayne's new mixtape. In an interview with Power 95.3 in Orlando, President Obama was asked what his opinion was about Nicki Minaj endorsing Mitt Romney, and this is what his response was:
"I'm not sure that is actually what happened. I think she had a song on there, a little rap that said that. But, she likes to play different characters. So I don't know what's going on there."

Lagos State Governor refuses chieftaincy title

Governor Fashola politely turned a chieftaincy title from the Oniru of Iru Land, Oba Abiodun Idowu Oniru, at the monarch's 75th birthday and 18th year coronation anniversary, which took place on  Saturday, 8th of September. The Lagos state governor said he couldn't accept any titles at this time so he could focus on his job as a governor.

He said;
“Kabiyesi and his chiefs can continue to lead us, let them deal with all those traditional and chieftancy issues. At the appropriate time, we will come and join them, but for now, leave us in our suits, booths, overalls and helmets, because this agbada is not good for clearing refuse and tarring the roads.”

Bruno, whose contract with Flamengo has been suspended, faces charges of kidnapping, hiding a body and forming a criminal gang with intent to murder.

He is presently serving a four-and-a-half-year prison sentence after being convicted of assaulting and abducting Ms Samudio, but will be tried for her murder later this year.
